Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007224

A layer of fossilized soil or clay, also known as underclay, found directly beneath a coal seam. This material represents the ancient soil in which the plants that formed the coal originally grew. The presence of a seatearth is a strong geological indicator for prospecting, as it signals the likely proximity of a coal bed.
