Gob

The waste material, such as rock and shale, left behind in a mine after the valuable coal or ore has been extracted. This material is often used to backfill mined-out areas to provide support or is piled in spoil heaps on the surface. Gob piles can sometimes spontaneously combust due to oxidation of pyritic material.
