Goaf

The void or cavity left behind in an underground mine after the valuable mineral, such as a coal seam, has been completely extracted. This area is either allowed to collapse under the weight of the overlying rock strata in a controlled manner or is backfilled with waste rock to provide ground support. The term is synonymous with gob and is most frequently used in longwall coal mining operations.
