Sit
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005308
A subsidence or collapse of the ground, either at the surface or within underground mine workings. This ground failure occurs when the overlying rock strata settle into a void created by the extraction of minerals, or when support structures like pillars fail under pressure. The extent of a sit is monitored using surveying techniques and instrumentation to assess the risk to surface structures and ongoing mining operations.
