Ribbed
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004843
Describing a coal seam that contains thin layers of slate or similar rock interbedded with the coal. Such bands, often called partings or dirt bands, break the seam into slices and must be separated from the coal during mining or at the preparation plant. A ribbed seam therefore yields more waste and a lower share of saleable coal than a clean seam of the same thickness.
