Ribbon

A narrow, continuous plate or batten used in shipbuilding to define the sheer line and other hull curves during the framing process. It is temporarily fastened to the frames, serving as a guide for fairing the hull and positioning the shell plating. Unlike permanent strakes, ribbons are removed after the main hull plates are fitted and secured.
