The process of creating full-scale drawings or templates of structural components, particularly for shipbuilding, aircraft construction, or complex metalwork. A loftsman works on a large, clear floor known as a mold loft, laying out the precise shapes and dimensions of parts like ship hull plates or aircraft ribs.
