Runghead
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005000
The exposed end of a floor timber or frame that projects through the hull planking of a wooden boat or ship, a feature of clinker or lapstrake construction methods. These visible frame ends are a distinctive element of traditional boatbuilding, particularly in certain historical vessel types like the Viking longship. In modern shipbuilding, frames are almost universally contained within the hull, making the runghead a feature of historical replication or specific traditional designs.
