Garboard strake

The first line of planking or plating on a ship's hull, positioned immediately adjacent to the keel on either side. This strake is a primary longitudinal strength member, forming the connection between the bottom of the hull and the central keel structure. The joint between the garboard strake and the keel must be exceptionally strong and watertight.
