Water line

The line where the water surface meets a ship's hull, shown on the outside of the hull as marks for the light and loaded conditions. The lowest mark shows the proper depth of the vessel when empty and the highest shows it when fully loaded. In ship plans, water lines are also horizontal sections of the hull at set heights above the keel.
