Devil seam
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001684
A thin, irregular, and often discontinuous layer of soft clay or dirt found within a coal seam. This layer represents a depositional break during the coal's formation and creates a plane of weakness within the coal bed. The presence of a devil seam complicates mining operations by reducing the stability of the mine roof and walls and lowering the quality of the extracted coal.
