Pitch mining

The extraction of natural asphalt or bitumen from surface deposits or shallow underground formations. This method involves quarrying or open-pit mining techniques to recover the solid or semi-solid hydrocarbon. Pitch mining is distinct from the extraction of liquid petroleum and is often associated with tar sands or oil sands.
