Crutter

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001478

A miner who specializes in driving a cross-measure drift, or crut, which is a roadway excavated through rock strata rather than along a coal seam. This work involves creating tunnels to connect different seams, improve ventilation, or provide haulage routes, requiring skills in hard-rock drilling and blasting. The rate of pay for a crutter was typically higher than for a collier because excavating stone is more difficult and slower than mining coal.
