Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006378
Describing a method of excavating a shaft in which a drift is first driven to a point below the intended shaft position, and the shaft is then excavated by raising, working upward from the drift, instead of being sunk downward from the surface. The drift gives access at the lower end, so the rock broken in the raise can be removed through it.
