Raise

A vertical or steeply inclined underground opening excavated from a lower level to a higher level in a mine. Raises are created to provide ventilation, a pathway for moving ore or waste rock, or as a means of access for personnel and materials between different mine levels. This excavation is the opposite of a shaft, which is sunk from the surface downward, or a winze, which is sunk from one underground level to another.
