Day level
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001572
A horizontal or nearly horizontal tunnel, also called an adit, driven from the surface into a hillside to access a mineral deposit. It serves as an entry for workers and equipment, a path for removing ore, and a channel for natural drainage of water from the mine workings. Unlike a shaft, which is a vertical or steeply inclined opening, a day level's portal is open to the daylight at the surface.
