Winze

A vertical or steeply inclined shaft sunk downwards from an existing level in a mine, typically connecting two levels or providing access to deeper ore bodies. Unlike a raise, which is driven upwards, a winze is excavated downwards. Winzes are used for exploration, ventilation, or ore transport.
