Winter-hained

Describing pasture or grassland that has been kept ungrazed through the winter, so that its grass is saved for use later, for example by ewes and lambs in spring. The word is Scots, from hain, meaning to preserve or save. A winter-hained field is held in reserve instead of being eaten down while the stock are on other ground.
