Adit
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000098
A horizontal or nearly horizontal passage driven into the side of a hill or mountain, used for access to a mine, drainage, or ventilation. Unlike a shaft, an adit opens directly to the surface, making it easier to transport ore and remove water. Adits are often constructed to intersect ore bodies or to provide a lower-cost alternative to vertical shafts for shallow deposits.
