Driftway

A horizontal or nearly horizontal underground passage in a mine, driven from the surface or from a shaft, that follows the strike of a mineral deposit. It provides access for miners, equipment, and ventilation, and serves as a haulage route for extracted ore or waste rock. A driftway differs from a crosscut, which is driven across the strike of the deposit.
