Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005617

A vertical or steeply inclined internal shaft that connects different levels or seams within an underground mine but does not extend to the surface. Staples are used for ventilation, transporting ore or waste rock between levels, or as a passageway for personnel and materials. Unlike a main shaft that provides primary access to the mine from the surface, a staple serves as an auxiliary, inter-level connection.
