Drift mine

An underground mine accessed by a horizontal or nearly horizontal passage driven into a hillside or mountain. This type of mine follows a mineral seam or ore body that outcrops on the surface, requiring no vertical shaft. Drift mines are common for coal, gypsum, and other bedded deposits found in mountainous regions.
