Stulm
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005736
A horizontal passage or adit driven from a valley or hillside to access underground mine workings, primarily for drainage or exploration. Stulms allow water to flow out of the mine by gravity, reducing the need for pumping, and can also serve as a haulage route for ore. Unlike a vertical shaft, a stulm provides direct, level access into the side of a hill and is characteristic of mining in steep terrain, such as the tin mines of Cornwall.
