Sturt

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005737

A payment or tribute paid by a miner for the privilege of working a specific length of a mineral vein, particularly in historical lead mining districts. The payment was made to the owner of the mineral rights or to the Barmaster, the official who regulated mining activities. This system allowed individual miners to gain access to a section of ground, with the sturt representing a form of rent or a one-time fee for the claim, distinct from an ongoing royalty on production.
