Farmer

A lessee or contractor who works a mine or a section of a mine, paying a royalty or fixed rent to the owner. This individual or small group assumes the operational risks and costs of extraction in exchange for a share of the proceeds from the recovered ore. The payment, known as a farm or tribute, was historically set as a percentage of the value of the mineral produced.
