Chartermaster

A historical figure in the British coal industry who acted as a contractor, leasing a mine or a specific section of a pit from the owner. The chartermaster, also known as a butty, would then hire miners and laborers, provide equipment, and oversee the extraction and sale of coal, paying the owner a royalty based on output. This contracting system was common in the Black Country and other regions during the 18th and 19th centuries before being largely superseded by direct management.
