Butty

A system in historical coal mining where a group of miners, led by a headman or 'butty,' contracted to extract coal from a specific section of the mine. The butty was responsible for organizing the work, hiring laborers, and receiving payment for the coal produced. This system was common before the widespread adoption of direct employment.
