Thirl

To bore or drill a hole through a rock mass or coal seam, creating a passage or connection between two existing mine workings. This process is undertaken to improve ventilation, provide access for miners, or facilitate the transport of materials. A thirl can also refer to the passage itself, connecting parallel roadways in a mine.
