Stoneman

A mine worker specializing in the excavation of rock, as opposed to coal or ore. The stoneman's primary task is to drive new tunnels (drifts or roadways) through barren rock to access new mineral reserves or to create haulage routes and ventilation airways. This work involves drilling, blasting, and removing the resulting rock debris, a process known as stone drifting or hard heading, which is distinct from production mining at the face.
