Gatewayman

A miner responsible for maintaining the roadways, or gateways, that provide access to the coal face in an underground mine. This work involves inspecting and repairing roof supports, clearing debris, and extending services like ventilation ducting, conveyor belts, and power cables as the face advances. The gatewayman's work is concentrated in the high-traffic arteries of the mine, distinct from the work of the colliers at the production face.
