Bye-workman

A mine worker not directly involved in the hewing or getting of coal but engaged in ancillary tasks necessary for the mine's operation. These duties included maintaining roadways, repairing timber supports, managing ventilation systems, and handling materials transport away from the coal face. Unlike a collier paid by the amount of coal produced, a bye-workman was typically paid a daily wage for their general labor and maintenance activities.
