Maingate

The primary intake roadway providing access, ventilation, and transport services to a longwall coal face. This tunnel runs along one side of the coal panel and is used to bring fresh air to the miners and to house the conveyor belt that transports coal away from the face shearer. The maingate advances with the longwall face as coal is extracted, while the parallel tailgate serves as the return airway.
