Repay

To render a seam with pitch or tar to make it watertight, a task performed during caulking and ship maintenance. After old caulking is removed and new material is driven into the planking seams, hot pitch is poured or 'paid' into the seam to seal it from water ingress. The term is part of the traditional shipbuilding phrase 'the devil to pay and no pitch hot'.
