Overcutter
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004066
A coal-cutting machine that makes its horizontal slice, or kerf, along the top of a seam or some distance above the floor. Releasing the coal along the roof in this way makes mining easier, and the method suited thick seams or seams with sticky coal. It is the counterpart of the undercutter, and the main difference from an ordinary shortwall machine is that the cutter bar is mounted at the top instead of the bottom.
