The internal planking or plating fitted over the floor timbers or tank top in a ship's hold, protecting the hull structure from cargo damage. This protective layer prevents heavy or abrasive cargo from directly contacting the ship's frames and plating. It also provides a level surface for stowing cargo, often made of wood or steel.
