Popcorn ceiling

A spray-on or paint-on ceiling treatment with a bumpy, textured surface resembling popcorn kernels. This finish, popular from the mid-20th century, was used to conceal imperfections in the ceiling and provide minor acoustic dampening. Popcorn ceiling material manufactured before the 1980s often contained asbestos fibers, requiring professional abatement procedures for safe removal as specified by environmental regulations.
