Cradling

A framework of wood or metal members installed to support another surface, such as a suspended ceiling, a curved plaster form, or ductwork. This substructure creates a level or shaped plane for the finished material to be attached to, independent of the main building structure. In suspended ceilings, cradling consists of a grid of hangers and channels that hold the ceiling tiles or panels.
