Hold

A large, enclosed space below the main deck of a ship used for stowing cargo. On a bulk carrier or general cargo ship, the hold is the primary cargo-carrying area, separated from other holds by transverse bulkheads. The capacity of a hold is measured in cubic meters or cubic feet, with separate values given for grain capacity (the total interior volume) and bale capacity (the volume for packaged goods).
