LILO

An acronym for Lift-On/Lift-Off, describing a method of loading and unloading cargo, particularly shipping containers, onto a vessel. This operation uses cranes, either on the ship or at the port, to vertically lift cargo from the quay and lower it into the hold or onto the deck. LILO vessels are distinct from RoRo (Roll-On/Roll-Off) ships, where cargo is driven on and off the vessel via ramps.
