The non-valuable rock, soil, and other material that must be excavated to access a desired ore body or mineral seam. This waste material, also known as overburden if it lies above the deposit or gangue if it is intermixed with the ore, must be removed and disposed of. The ratio of waste rock to ore, known as the stripping ratio, is a key economic factor in surface mining operations.
