Footwall

The body of rock that lies underneath an inclined fault, vein, or mineral deposit. In underground mining operations that follow a dipping ore body, the footwall forms the floor of the stope or drift upon which miners and equipment move. The corresponding block of rock located above the deposit is known as the hanging wall.
