Hanging side

The rock mass located on the upper side of an inclined ore body, fault, or vein. It is the block of rock that lies above the mineral deposit, in contrast to the footwall, which is the rock mass below. The stability of the hanging side, also called the hanging wall, is a primary concern in the design of underground mine stopes and support systems.
