Country rock

The native rock that encloses or is traversed by a mineral deposit, ore body, or an igneous intrusion. It represents the original geological formation present before the emplacement of the younger rock or mineral vein. The physical and chemical differences between the country rock and the intruding material, such as hardness or composition, influence mining methods and mineral processing techniques.
