The rock formation that encloses or is intruded by an ore deposit, igneous intrusion, or mineral vein; also known as country rock or host rock. Its geological, structural, and chemical properties affect the formation of the ore body and the stability of mine workings. For example, the competence and permeability of the country rock are key factors in designing ground support systems.
