Cropping

The practice of leaving a portion of a mineral seam, such as a pillar of coal, unworked near the surface outcrop or property boundary. This is done to provide support for the surface land, prevent water ingress from surface sources, or to serve as a safety barrier. The width of the unworked mineral barrier is determined by geological conditions and local mining regulations.
