Hanging wall

The mass of rock that lies immediately above an inclined fault, vein or ore body, contrasted with the footwall below it. It is the wall that hangs over the miner's head when working in the vein, which is the origin of the name, and in inclined deposits it is the side that has to be supported against falls.
