A small fastener used to secure two pieces of fabric together, passing through a buttonhole or a fabric loop. Buttons are produced from a variety of materials, including natural substances like shell, wood, and horn, as well as synthetic polymers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Button size is measured in lignes, where 40 lignes equal one inch (25.4 mm) in diameter.
