Ligne

A historical unit of length, originating in France, used in the button and ribbon manufacturing industries to measure diameter and width. One ligne is equivalent to 1/40 of an inch, or approximately 0.635 millimeters. Button sizes are still designated by ligne measurements; for example, a standard shirt button is about 18 ligne, corresponding to a diameter of just under half an inch.
