Nicol prism

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003894

A type of polarizing prism constructed from a calcite crystal, designed to produce a beam of plane-polarized light. It separates an unpolarized light beam into two orthogonally polarized rays, transmitting only one while deflecting the other. This prism was historically used in polarimeters and microscopes for analyzing optical properties of materials, though modern polarizers often employ synthetic films.
