Optic
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004021
A single component of an optical system, such as a lens, mirror, prism, or filter, that acts on light by refracting, reflecting, dispersing, or polarizing it. Optics are manufactured from materials like glass, quartz, or specialized polymers, shaped and polished to precise specifications to control the path of light. The quality of an optic is often specified by its surface accuracy, measured in fractions of a wavelength of light, and its scratch-dig number per MIL-PRF-13830B.
